Chi Omega History

It all began on April 5, 1895, at the University of Arkansas when four women, with the help of a local dentist, established the secrets and symbolism that today bind over 260,000 women. This small band of women founded Chi Omega after realizing a need for an organization that would foster both friendship and respect for the potential and inherent value of women. Over the years, Chi Omega has provided its members with unique opportunities in leadership, scholarship, and lifelong friendship -- striving to provide each sister with a commitment to personal integrity, excellence in academic and intellectual pursuits, intergenerational participation, community service, leadership opportunities, and social enrichment. Chi Omega is the largest women's fraternal organization, with over 411,000 initiates, 181 collegiate chapters, and over 240 alumnae chapters. Throughout Chi Omega's long and proud history, the Fraternity has brought its members equaled opportunities for personal growth and development.

The Alpha Chapter at the University of Washington

In 1909, The Alpha Chapter of Chi Omega was established at the beautiful University of Washington in Seattle. Ever since, we strive to live out Chi Omega's six purposes each and every day -- friendship, high standards of personnel, sincere learning and creditable scholarship, participation in campus activities, career development, and community service.

A letter from the President:

Welcome to the Chi Omega Alpha Chapter! My name is Aubrey Mitchell, and I am honored to serve as the president of our chapter for the 2026-2027 academic year.

Moving to Seattle from Austin, Texas, I had no idea how I was going to find community at such a large university.
I knew nothing about the sorority experience before going through recruitment, and I was amazed by how quickly I fell in love with the women of Chi Omega. Every member I had met was someone I could truly see myself growing with— someone bubbly, hilarious, and authentically themselves. I knew by joining this chapter I was becoming part of something special, and now serving as president, I can confidently say it has been the highlight of my college experience.

During initiation, my mom wrote me a note that read, “I hope you find the kind of sisterhood that lifts you up when you are down…that you pour into and that gives you everything in return.” There are no better words to describe how Chi Omega has supported me in all aspects of my life. The women I surround myself with are wonderfully unique, passionate, and lively, and they teach me about the kind of person I want to be. These women are my role models, my support system, and my best friends.

Chi Omega’s sisterhood is built upon genuine connection, encouragement, and a shared commitment to lifting each other up. Whether we are studying together, exploring the Seattle area, going on hikes, trying new coffee shops and restaurants, or watching a movie together at the chapter house, we are experiencing college together and changing each other's lives for the better. Together, our members bring diverse interests, ambitions, and personalities that make us greater than the sum of our parts.

Chi Omega has given me a sense of home that makes the distance from Austin feel more bearable. To those unsure whether joining a sorority is the right decision, I encourage you to challenge yourself and go into this process with an open mind. Who knows, you might fall in love with a chapter and have the opportunity to lead it. I am so lucky to have these women in my life, and I am so grateful for the memories we’ve made together and the ones that are yet to come.

It is a privilege to give back to the place that has given me so much after two short years of being in college. I have so much appreciation for how much care and love goes into running this chapter, and for all the people in my life that I can lean on for support. I could not lead this chapter without my incredible executive board, advisors, and friends. I’m grateful to have been thought worthy by my fellow Chi Omegas to represent our organization, and I am so inspired by the impact we make on our campus and within the greater Seattle community.
